The Four Seasons of NYC
No matter the season, something unique is always going on in New York. As the largest city in the United States, New York City draws in millions of tourists every year, but also has some great attractions that locals can check out. Whether you are an apartment renter looking for something to do, or you are someone looking to make a trip out to New York City, there is always something going on, regardless of what the current season is. It is called The City That Never Sleeps for a reason.
Unique Activities Any Time of the Year
As one can imagine, when the weather is warm, there is plenty to do outside. Coney Island is the most popular beach spot with New Yorkers because of its amusement park, a circus sideshow and a museum, among other things. If you are into jazz, you can check out the Jazz Age Lawn Party, a 1920’s themed party featuring jazz performances that is held twice during the summer. From the Financial District, you’re also only a short ferry ride from NYC’s best outdoor escapes, including Governors Island.
Fall is arguably considered one of the best seasons to be in the city. It’s when the New York Film Festival is held, where a wide variety of films are played in a non-competitive environment. If you are more of a food connoisseur, you might want to check out the New York City Wine and Food Festival, where attendees can try a wide selection of foods created by talented chefs. All proceeds go towards hunger-relief charities, so you get to have great food and help others at the same time.
In addition to the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, there is also the NYC Village Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village, which is one of the largest Halloween parades in the entire country. If you’re in the mood to view some unique costumes, take a walk around the East Village and Alphabet City area on the weekend before Halloween to view everyone in costume. It’s worth the trip.
Thanks to the Holiday Season, New York City becomes busy during the first half of winters. The city can get hectic thanks to the influx of tourists, so here are some things to do if you want to beat the holiday crowds. If you want to try your hand at ice skating, you can check out the Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park, where skating lessons are offered. This is a great alternative if you just want to have a nice, quiet skate, and you don’t want to deal with the crowds at Rockefeller Center. If you want to do some shopping, there are plenty of holiday markets that open up during the winter. The Union Square Holiday Market is one of your options, as it offers hundreds of hand-crafted items that you can give as gifts.
If you like music, you are in luck, because New York City hosts a Winter Jazzfest every January, which is a weeklong event featuring dozens of jazz performances. By the end of the winter, you probably need a good way to warm up. The City Bakery has you covered, as it hosts a Hot Chocolate Festival every February, during which a new flavor of hot chocolate is offered every day of the month. There are plenty of other ways to make your winter more enjoyable, don’t have to worry about having nothing to do while the weather is cold.
New York City in the Spring
Once the weather starts warming up again, plenty of new activities pop up in New York City. Street fairs are quite popular in the spring, and there are plenty of them to choose between. One example is the Hester Street Fair, which has plenty of events throughout the spring, including Hester Street Fair’s Dog Day, a day dedicated to those who care for dogs. With the weather getting warmer, spring is also a perfect time to do some bike riding. It’s nice to get some exercise outside once all the cold air starts going away.
If you want to try doing something a little different, you could check out The Orchid Show held at the New York Botanical Garden every year. During this event, thousands of colorful orchid are displayed, and musical entertainment is provided. Macy’s Flower Show, another flower themed event, also takes place every year, if you want to see a wider variety of flowers. If you are looking for other things to do during the spring, here are a few other suggestions.
No matter what time of the year it is, there is always something to do in New York City. Take your pick and have a good time.
